WHO CAN JOIN A CLINICAL TRIAL?

We welcome cancer patients who want to join a clinical trial. However, you cannot just join any clinical trial. On this page, we explain the kinds of clinical research that Early Drug Development Center (EDDC) performs and the criteria you have to meet if you want to join.

Difference in the phases of clinical research

Clinical research consists of four phases. At the EDDC, we focus on phase 1 and phase 2 clinical research only.

In phase 1, we investigate the reaction of human body to the drug. We also look at the best way to administer the drug and what the best dosage is.

In phase 2, we research if the treatment works for a specific group of patients. We aim to find the balance between the safety of the drug and the effect it has on the tumor.

We also have a page on this website that explains how clinical research works at the EDDC. Below, the most important inclusion criteria are described:

1. Type of tumor

Phase 1 trials are usually open to various types of tumors.

2. Measurable disease

Having a measurable disease, which means it can be scanned and accurately measured by an experienced radiologist.

3. Standard therapy

Having received standard therapy.

4. ECOG / WHO performance score is 0 or 1

This scale is a prognostic factor and determines a patient’s ability for therapy toleration. These numbers stand for:

  • 0/ Patient is fully active, able to carry on all pre-disease performance without restriction, mostly asymptomatic.
  • 1/ Patient is restricted in physically strenuous activity but ambulatory and capable of accomplishing light or sedentary work.

5. Renal and organ function

Having an adequate renal and organ function.

6. Biopsy

Able to undergo a biopsy of the tumor or metastasis.
